Discussion Title Are You Ready for Election Day?

In the final stretch before the Nov. 6 General Election, Fairfax County General Registrar Cameron Quinn will be available to answer your questions about voting, going to the polls and more on Friday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. Please note that questions for the online chat will not be answered until Nov. 2 and any questions regarding voting that need immediate attention should go to voting@fairfaxcounty.gov or call 703-222-0776 (TTY 711).

Sonia Skipper : Good afternoon. Only a few days remain until Election Day. We are all very busy and today I will be representing the Office of Elections on behalf of Cameron Quinn. Beth Methfessel is here with me and we look forward to answering your questions. Remember, there is vital information about voting and the election at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/elections

Juan : How do i request a absentee ballot?

Sonia Skipper : The deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail or fax has passed. You can still vote absentee in person until Saturday, Nov. 3. All absentee voting locations are open until 8 p.m. this evening and tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For a list of absentee voting locations, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/elections/absentee.htm.

Please keep in mind, Virginia does not have early voting. We have absentee voting, and in order to qualify for absentee voting you must meet certain qualifications. Those qualifying reasons are also listed at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/elections/absentee.htm.

Anonymous User : where is the nearest polling place for 22181? Also, is there a polling place website by zip code

Sonia Skipper : You can find your Virginia polling place online at the State Board of Elections website at www.sbe.virginia.gov or refer to your voter registration card.  Every registered voter in the Commonwealth of Virginia should have recently received a new voter card by mail. You may also call 703-222-0776 (TTY 711). However, please understand that there is a high call volume right now and there may be a wait.

Sen├Ár : Can question Spanish. I have friend? Should translate? Or do officer Spanish?

Sonia Skipper : It is a federal requirement that Fairfax County provide all election materials in Spanish, including the ballot. On Election Day, the Chief Election Officer at your voting site will provide you with additional language assistance.

Debbie Sanders : How do I find out if my daughter submitted an Absentee Ballot Application? She is at Virginia Tech. We sent her the flyer that came out with the info on how to fill out the Absentee Ballot, but we don't recall actually getting the ballot to send her. This is her first election so she was very excited about voting. Is there anything that can be done?

Sonia Skipper : If your daughter has successfully submitted her absentee ballot application, she may have requested that her ballot be mailed directly to her college address. She can check the status of her absentee ballot application online at https://www.voterinfo.sbe.virginia.gov/PublicSite/Public/FT2/PublicLookup.aspx.

ania : when is the best time to go vote and try avoiding the lines?

Sonia Skipper : On Election Day, if you have the flexibility you may find that the lines are shorter between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The poll hours in Virginia are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Please note that if you are in line by 7 p.m., you will still be allowed to vote.

Um : What election is this?

Sonia Skipper : On Tuesday, Nov. 6 Fairfax County will be voting for Electors for President/Vice President; United States Senate; and U.S. House of Representatives-8th, 10th and 11th Congressional Districts. Voters will also be voting on two Virginia Constitutional Amendments and four Fairfax County Bond questions.

Brian C. : What do I need to do to vote in-person absentee?

Sonia Skipper : To vote in-person absentee, you will first need to come in to an absentee voting location and fill out an absentee ballot application. You must also provide a valid form of identification (a list is available online at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/elections/a1voteridentificationchart2012.pdf). You will then be able to vote during your same visit.

A list of absentee voting locations (and their hours) may be found at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/elections/absentee.htm.

Anonymous User : I don't understand the difference between a constitutional bond and county bond. What does a bond do? What are we voting on?

Sonia Skipper : For information on the two Virginia Constitutional Amendments, go to http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/elections/:%20http://www.sbe.virginia.gov/Files/Cast%20Your%20Ballot/Candidate%20List/201211ConstitutionalAmendmentsBrochure.pdf. To learn more about the Fairfax County Bond Referenda, visit http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/bond/.
