The goal of the Archives & Records Management Branch is to retain inactive and archival records for their mandated retention period in an efficient and effective manner, while providing public access to them. The Archives & Records Management Branch provides professional assistance and advice to County agencies in records management, ensuring that legally mandated retention schedules and preservation standards for permanent records are followed.

In accordance with the Virginia Public Records Act, records are retained because of their administrative, fiscal, legal and historical values. Mandated retention and disposition schedules govern the life cycles of inactive, non-permanent records. Permanent records, sometimes referred to as archival documents, are retained because of their historical significance. Both inactive records and archival documents can be stored and/or converted to microfilm or other media to facilitate public and agency access and for preservation purposes.

Not all County records are maintained at this site. Most current records are retained by the appropriate agency. It is best to call the agency that maintains the records before contacting the Archives & Records Management Branch.

For additional questions about record transfers, storage, disposition procedures, micrographics and other information please view Frequently Asked Questions.
