Job Hunting
See also the library's links for Older Adults.   For preparation materials for specific career licensing exams, civil service tests and military tests, and for resources to develop job hunting and workplace skills such as resume writing, interviewing and networking, see the library's LearningExpress Library online database.

  • Good Starting Points
    Resume writing, interviewing techniques, and salaries are among the topics discussed on most of these sites.

    • CareerOneStop
      CareerOneStop not only helps you find a job, but also helps you do self-assessments, write better resumes (includes resume templates), and helps you locate state and local services such as unemployment benefits. There are even resources to assist in the transition from military to civilian careers.

    • Job-Hunt.org
      Articles about how to go about searching for a job, pitfalls to avoid, how to choose a good Web site for online searching and more. The site also includes links to a large number of other job searching sites.

    • Jobweb
      Specializes in job-hunting advice and information on the job market for new college graduates. From the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

    • Quintessential Careers Job-Hunting Resource Guides
      Online resources for cover letters, resumes and interviewing for job seekers, career changers and students.

    • The Riley Guide
      This excellent site is full of helpful advice about how to go about your job search, both online and off. There are also links to job and resume sites, as well as a few book recommendations.

    • SkillSource — Employment and Training Services
      The Northern Virginia Workforce Investment Board has created SkillSource job centers, where you can prepare a new resume, find out about training opportunities and look for potential jobs, free of charge. The Fairfax County Web site provides information about the assistance they offer as well as the locations of their job centers in Fairfax County. An array of youth services including training and employment assistance are also available.

    • The Wall Street Journal — Careers
      Career-oriented articles, a place to post your resume and salary information. Mostly geared towards high-salaried, professional positions.

    Information on high-growth, in-demand jobs designed for students, career changers and parents. A collaboration between the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Education.

  • O*NET OnLine
    The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Information Network offers three different search strategies for exploring occupations: Search for career information using predetermined employment categories; enter personal, current or future skills to retrieve sets of occupations requiring those particular skills; or search using various codes defined by existing employment classification systems, e.g., the military classification system. Individuals with physical or health challenges can access the Job Accommodation Network or other pertinent links from this site.

  • Occupational Outlook Handbook
    In addition to providing detailed descriptions of various careers, this resource has current information on typical wages and the growth of opportunities in each field.

  • Virginia Career View
    Sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education, Virginia Career View is a great site for young people to explore career options. Brief descriptions and statistics on a wide variety of careers are provided in simple terms for school-aged children and in more detail for college students. Links are provided to assist with interviewing techniques, resume writing, summer jobs, college financial aid, internships and more.
