Board meetings are conducted according to Robert's Rules of Order. The Chairman--the ranking elected official and ceremonial head of the County government--presides at Board meetings and has all the rights and duties of other Board members, including one vote, but does not have independent executive authority or a legislative veto.
The Board meets approximately two Tuesdays per month beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Board Auditorium in the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, in Fairfax. Special meetings may be scheduled on other days, for example, when the Board holds public hearings on the County's budget. The Board's scheduled agenda is published ten days in advance of meetings in the Weekly Agenda, available by e-mail subscription. The Weekly Agenda also contains links to summaries of prior Board meetings, agendas of the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals, and other information of interest to you.
The Board Auditorium is located off the Government Center lobby to the right of the Forum. You may sit wherever you like in the Auditorium except for the first two rows of seats in the front of the room, which are reserved for press and County staff making presentations to the Board.
The Auditorium is accessible for persons with disabilities. Those in
wheelchairs can enter the Auditorium two ways:
through the main Auditorium entrance just off the Forum,
- by taking the orange bank of elevators, located to the right off the lobby, to the first floor: exit the elevator and turn left, and then left again into the first corridor; follow the corridor to the Auditorium entrance on the speakers' level.
An audio enhancement system with multiple receivers is available for use by persons with hearing impairments. Requests for these receivers should be made in advance by calling the Building Management Office, 703-324-2055, which can provide other information on accessibility accommodations for persons with disabilities. To request a receiver on the day of the meeting, see the Clerk in the Board Auditorium. In addition, real time captioning is available at all times during Board of Supervisors' meetings upon request. No advance request is required.
Monday Board meetings are shown live on Fairfax County’s cable Channel 16, and also video streamed live via the Internet. Channel 16 cablecasts of Board meetings are closed captioned and viewers will be able to see the captions on the live cablecasts and the replays. Call 703-324-5930, TTY 711, to purchase tapes of the meetings, or visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/cable/channel16/vod.htm to view meetings over the Internet from the past three months.
