Braddock District Community Champions
David Curtis, 2017 Braddock District Community Champion
David Curtis, a dedicated volunteer with the Truro Homes Association Stream Team, was selected by Supervisor Cook as the Braddock District’s 2017 Community Champion! Dave was recognized at the Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards on April 21 for his dedication and commitment to the Turkey Run Stream Restoration Project. This award is given annually by Volunteer Fairfax and recognizes volunteers from across the county who make a real difference in the lives of their neighbors.
The Turkey Run Stream, which flows through the heart of the community, has suffered from serious stormwater runoff problems, leading to eroded stream banks, loss of natural habitat, poor water quality, exposed public utility infrastructure, and unstable trees that create a safety concern. There have also been a few cases that have threatened homeowner lots. Dave’s continued efforts leading the “Stream Team” ultimately led to development of a project to restore 3,500 linear feet of the stream channel, including re-grading and stabilizing eroded stream banks, modifying the stream channel, and replacing seven pedestrian bridges that are part of the heavily-used trail. This project is an outstanding example of how a publicly-funded stream restoration project can be done on private property, and it could not have happened without Dave’s hard work, dedication, and leadership. His work will result in long-lasting improvements that not only make the community a better place to live, but also protect the environment. We are grateful for his hard work and look forward to completion of this project.
