Board of Supervisors Hosting Community Forums on Creating Livable Community for Older Residents

Fairfax County projects a dramatic increase in its older population over the next few decades. By 2020, more than 353,000 residents will be over 50 and more than 87,000 will be over 70. By 2030, more than 385,000 will be over 50 and more than 105,000 will be over 70.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, together with the Fairfax Area Commission on Aging, is working on a plan to create a more livable community for its older residents.
This summer, they are hosting community forums throughout the county to hear what residents have to say. The three focus areas include: housing & transportation; easy access to services; and healthy lifestyles & community engagement.

This is your chance to share ideas on what we need to do together to ensure the county continues the progress of the 2007 50+ Action Plan for a more livable, lifelong community for the county’s growing older population. Once the community forums are completed, a new Fairfax 50+ Action Plan will be developed to make this a reality. Go to and follow the link to Register Now for Community Forums or call 703-324-5411, TTY 711 to register. Supervisor Cook and Supervisor Penny Gross will co-host a session for Braddock and Mason District residents on July 11 at 9:00 a.m. at Ravensworth Baptist Church.

'Sk8 for a Cause' to Support National Medical Center

Students and parents from all county schools are invited to come out to the 7th annual SkateFest & “Sk8 For A Cause” at Wakefield Skatepark / Audrey Moore Rec Center here in Braddock District on Friday and Saturday, June 21 & 22. The event will raise money for Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. SkateFest has raised over $30,000 through the festival’s philosophy of kids raising money for kids and attracted more than 1,000 spectators and 300 participants in 2012.

The festival features two separate events. “Sk8 For A Cause” is open to all ages/levels and participants are encouraged to get family, friends, neighbors, and businesses to sponsor their ride with donations for Children’s National. The Skateboarding Competition’s preliminary rounds will be held on Friday, June 21 with registration beginning at 3:00 p.m. The final rounds will kick-off on Saturday, June 23 after the “Sk8 For A Cause” ride. There will be over $20,000 in prizes, trophies and giveaways. The top finishers in each age group and category will receive prize packages that include brand name gear, skate decks and more.
