Recognizing the Braddock Champions of Character Award Winners
Recognizing the Braddock Champions of Character Award Winners
Late last month I was pleased to attend the annual Fairfax County
Champions of Character Awards ceremony. The Champions of Character
program, organized by the Fairfax County Athletic Council (FCAC), in
partnership with the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services
(NCS), honors athletes, coaches and parents who have demonstrated
extraordinary service in the sports community, while modeling the basic
traits of good character: respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and
citizenship.
I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Braddock winners
and acknowledge their great accomplishments, which extend beyond the
field and serve as an example to us all and a reminder of why Fairfax
County is such a great place to live.
Patrick Halloran, now a senior at W.T. Woodson High School, is a young
man of exemplary character and class. He maintains more than a 4.0 grade
point average while taking an advanced course load and is a three-year
letter winner in football.
Hannah Steger, a member of the spring 2012 BRYC 16 SMACK volleyball
team, was nominated for her hard work and for the joy she brought her
coaches and teammates. Not content to just focus on herself, during the
club season Hannah also served as co-coach of a BRYC House volleyball
team.
Coach and former NVYLL Commissioner, Dave Britton, helped to build the
Annandale Youth Lacrosse club. More than serve as a coach though, David
instilled the importance of respect, trust in one another, leadership and
sportsmanship in all his athletes.
Chris Haley, a longtime coach, mentor and inspiration to the community
was nominated for consistently teaching respect for sports, good
character and through his commitment to youth development, and dedication
to the community we call home.
