Fairfax County produces 1.5 million tons of trash a year. Collecting and disposing of this enormous amount of trash presents a significant environmental and economic challenge. On this edition of Planning Commission Roundtable, learn how this challenge is met by the county’s Department of Public Works and Environmental Services - Solid Waste Collection and Recycling Division. Join Planning Commission Chairman Pete Murphy and his guests: Joyce Doughty, Director of the Solid Waste Disposal & Resource Recovery Division, DPWES; and Jeffrey Smithberger, Director of Solid Waste Collection & Recycling, DPWES, as they discuss the county’s recycling program, its waste-to-energy facility, and the twenty-year plan to continue to handle the county’s waste disposal needs in a safe, environmentally conscious and economically sound manner.
