Channel 16 Goes Digital

Fairfax County Government Channel 16 Goes Digital on Dec. 11

Cox Communications Northern Virginia will be moving the County and school channels to digital-only format effective Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013. As a result, a subscriber will need either a Cox digital cable box, a digital cable-ready TV or a CableCARD to access the following channels:

  • Fairfax County Government Channel 16 (Ch. 16)
  • FCPS Channel Red Apple Channel 21 (Ch. 21)
  • FCPS Community Classroom Channel 25 (Ch. 25)and
  • FCPS Teaching Channel 99 (Ch. 99)

A subscriber who has one of these devices need not take any action.

The few existing subscribers who have older analog TVs and subscribe only to Cox’s basic analog cable service,TV Starter, without the use of a set-top box will no longer be able to access the above channels.

To help mitigate the change for these subscribers, Cox has agreed to make available a “PEG Channels Offer.” Cox will provide subscribers with up to two set-top boxes that will enable the viewing of channels 16, 21, 25 and 99, as well as other Public, Educational and Governmental (PEG) channels that are already telecast in digital-only form, without charge for one year from the date of the change.

To take advantage of the “PEG Channels Offer” contact Cox Communications at 703-378-8422.

Be sure to state “PEG Channels Offer” when speaking to the Cox customer service representative.

For additional questions, please contact the Fairfax County Department of Cable and Consumer Services, Communications Policy and Regulation Division, at 703-324-5902.

To access the above channels with a digital TV (with built in QAM tuner), go to the TV menu, select input as “Cable,” and scan for available channels.  The above channels can be found at the following locations.
