Fairfax Connector Seeks Public Input on Proposed Changes to Routes in Reston, Herndon and Tysons

Fairfax Connector is proposing changes to Reston Internal Bus System (RIBS) service, routes 928 and 937 in Herndon, and Tysons circulator and Express Lanes routes in response to changing travel patterns and ridership since the start of Silver Line Metrorail service. The proposed changes, to take place in Spring 2015, aim to improve on-time performance, enhance connectivity, and provide more direct service for the majority of passengers.

Highlights of the proposed changes include:

  • Schedule adjustments to RIBS 1 and RIBS 3 service to improve on-time performance;
  • Route and schedule adjustments to RIBS 2, RIBS 4, RIBS 5, and routes 928 and 937 to provide new and more direct connections in Herndon and Reston;
  • Route and schedule adjustments to Tysons Circulator routes 422, 423, and 424 to provide more direct connections and bi-directional service to the majority of passengers connecting with the Silver Line Metrorail; and
  • Combining routes 493 and 494, with service proposed to operate between Lorton, Saratoga, Springfield, and Tysons via the 95 and 495 Express Lanes.

Proposed Changes by Route

Route 422 - Boone Boulevard-Howard Avenue

  • Buses will operate to and from the Tysons Corner Metrorail station (south side) via International Drive, Gallows Road, Old Courthouse Road, Howard Avenue, Boone Boulevard, and Towers Crescent Drive.
  • The service frequency will be every 10 minutes during rush hours and weekday middays, and every 15-20 minutes at other times.

Route 423 - Park Run-Westpark

  • Buses will operate to and from the Tysons Corner Metrorail station (north side) via Westpark Drive, International Drive, Tysons Westpark Transit Station, and Park Run Drive; providing more direct service to residential communities and businesses along Westpark Drive and Park Run Drive east of International Drive.
  • The service frequency will be every 10 minutes during rush hours and weekday middays, and every 15-20 minutes at other times, including weekends.

Route 424 - Jones Branch Drive

  • Buses will operate two-way service between the Tysons Corner (north side) and Spring Hill Metro stations via Jones Branch Drive.
  • The service frequency will be every 10 minutes during rush hours and weekday middays, and every 15-20 minutes at other times.

Routes 493, 494, 495 – Tysons-Express Lanes

  • Combine routes 493 and 494, with new Route 494 service connecting the Tysons, Saratoga, Springfield, and Lorton areas, replacing Route 493 service in Lorton and Saratoga.
  • Buses will operate on connections between the 95 Express Lanes and 495 Express Lanes in the peak direction of travel.
  • A new Route 495 schedule will reflect bus travel times adjusted for current traffic conditions.
  • Increase the time between buses during middays to align service provided with ridership demand.

Route 551 - South Lakes Drive

  • Trips will be added to the schedule to maintain an approximate 15 minute frequency of service during weekday rush hours.
  • A new schedule will reflect bus travel times adjusted for current traffic conditions.

Route 556 - Bennington Woods

  • NEW service between the Wiehle Metro station and portions of Bennington Woods Road, Lake Newport Road, and Walnut Branch Road during weekday rush hours, approximately 6 to 8:30 a.m. and 4 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Will serve bus stops along Old Reston Avenue between Temporary Road and Sunset Hills Road.

Route 928 - Herndon Parkway-Elden Street

  • Replace Route 928 with restructured RIBS 5, with daily service between Reston Town Center and Herndon Harbor House to bus stops along portions of Sunset Hills Road, Herndon Parkway, Dranesville Road, Park Avenue, and at the Kmart shopping center.
  • Provides all day service throughout the week to areas of Herndon currently served during weekday rush hours only.
  • Service will be shifted to Reston Town Center Transit Station instead of Herndon-Monroe Park & Ride to mitigate coming Silver Line, Phase 2 Herndon Station construction.

Route 937 - Coppermine Road-Elden Street

  • Improve connections for riders and simplify service to one route pattern within Herndon.
  • Serve bus stops at Harbor House and along Parcher Avenue and Springer Drive on all trips, including weekends.
  • Provide two-way service along River Birch Road and Thomas Jefferson Drive.

RIBS 1 – Lake Anne-Hunters Woods

  • A new schedule will reflect travel times adjusted for current traffic conditions.
  • The service frequency will change from every 30 minutes to approximately every 24 minutes weekdays and from every 30 minutes to approximately every 35 minutes on weekends.

RIBS 2 – South Lakes

  • NEW two-way service between Reston Town Center Transit Station and South Lakes Village Center via the Wiehle Metro station.
  • The service frequency will be approximately every 40 minutes weekdays and weekends.
  • RIBS 2 buses will continue in service as RIBS 4 buses at Reston Town Center Transit Station, providing a one-seat ride between the South Lakes Village Center, Wiehle Metro station, North Shore Drive, Reston Town Center, Spectrum Center, and North Point areas of Reston.
  • Alternate service to bus stops along South Lakes Drive west of the South Lakes Village Center, Herndon-Monroe Park & Ride, and Reston Town Center is available on routes 551, 981, and 983.

RIBS 3 – Hunters Woods-Lake Anne

  • A new schedule will reflect travel times adjusted for current traffic conditions.
  • The service frequency will change from every 30 minutes to approximately every 24 minutes weekdays and from every 30 minutes to approximately every 35 minutes on weekends.

RIBS 4 – North Point

  • NEW two-way service between Reston Town Center Transit Station and North Point Village Center via Fountain Drive, Spectrum Center, and the Trader Joe’s/Home Depot shopping area.
  • The service frequency will be approximately every 40 minutes weekdays and weekends.
  • RIBS 4 buses will continue in service as RIBS 2 buses at Reston Town Center Transit Station, providing a one-seat ride between the South Lakes, Wiehle-Reston East, North Shore Drive, Reston Town Center, Spectrum Center, and North Point areas of Reston.
  • Service to Lake Newport and Walnut Branch roads and additional service to Bennington Woods Road available on proposed Route 556.

RIBS 5 – Herndon

  • Combine RIBS 5 and Route 928 service. New RIBS 5 service will operate daily between Reston Town Center and Herndon Harbor House to bus stops along portions of Sunset Hills Road, Herndon Parkway, Dranesville Road, Park Avenue, and at the Kmart shopping center.
  • Provides all day service throughout the week to areas of Herndon currently served during weekday rush hours only.
  • Alternate service to bus stops on Elden Street west of the Kmart shopping center is available on Route 950.
