Car Free Day 2012
What is Car Free Day?
-
Car Free Day is an
international event celebrated every September 22 in which people are
encouraged to get around without cars and instead ride a train, bus,
bicycle, carpool, subway, vanpool, walk or telework. Car Free Day is
open to all commuters, students, homemakers and seniors in the
Washington metropolitan area.
-
Car Free
Day is organized in various cities throughout the world in
different ways, but with the common goal of taking cars off the
streets. The benefit to greater society is a day with less traffic
congestion, a greener environment and reduced gasoline demand. Today,
Car Free
Day includes celebrations in 1,500 cities in 40 countries.
-
Take the pledge to be
car free or car-lite on Saturday, Sept. 22.
Why try transit?
-
Most people say they could use more time and money. Transit helps you
get more of both! By using transit, you save on fuel and certain car
expenses that, for the average family, can really add up! The average
person spends up to a week's worth of vacation time a year sitting in
traffic. Don't waste your time -- try transit!
Where can transit take me?
-
Transit isn’t just for commuting to work. Transit options can help you get to a medical appointment, the salon, a party, the movies, a date, most anywhere you want to go.
What if I already use transit?
-
If you already use transit, Try Transit Week is a great time to keep up the good work and spread the word about using transit and the benefits that transit delivers such as cost savings and congestion relief.
How can I find the best option for me?
-
Virginia offers a variety of transit options including bus, rail, carpools, vanpools and telework.
