Auto Repairs

The Consumer Affairs Branch mediates auto repair complaints over $50 when the transaction has taken place in Fairfax County. You can file a complaint on-line, download a complaint form (19 KB .pdf file), or contact the Consumer Affairs Branch at 703-222-8435, TTY 711 to have a complaint form sent to you. Be sure to provide copies of all documents, receipts, and bills, along with a detailed statement of the problem and your efforts to resolve the problem with the business.

Complaint History
Before doing business with an auto repair company, you can search the complaint history of that company.

The Virginia Automobile Repair Facilities Act
The Virginia Automobile Repair Facilities Act, which must be posted in plain view at all auto repair facilities in Virginia, gives consumer the right:

  • to receive a written estimate prior to the commencement of work
  • to be given all replaced parts
  • to not have the cost of repairs exceed 10% of the estimate without your authorization

Mechanic’s Lien Law
The Mechanic's Lien Law provides a means to recover your vehicle from a repair facility in the event of a disputed garage bill. Details of the law and its requirements are defined in the Code of Virginia.
