Steps to Take When Hiring a Contrator
Check Licensing
Check that the contractor has the required state or local contractor's
license. Call the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and
Environmental Services, Licensing Section at 703-324-1540, TTY 711, and
the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation,
Licensing Section at 804-367-8511.
Review Complaint History
Review the contractor's complaint
history or call the Consumer Affairs Branch, 703-222-8435, TTY 711.

Review Contracts
Insist on a written fixed-price contract that includes the name and
address of the contractor, required license number(s), terms of payment,
start and completion dates, and warranty limitations. Read all terms
carefully before signing a contract.
Check Permits
Determine if a building permit is needed. If a permit is required, the
contractor must obtain the permit in his name. This assures that the
contractor, not the homeowner, is liable for any building code
violations.
