Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board Invites Public to Dialogue on FY 2010 Budget Issues
The Challenge
Fairfax County is projecting a budget deficit of more than $430 million for FY 2010 (beginning July 1, 2009), which must be addressed through a combination of spending reductions and other strategies. The County’s challenge is to develop a budget with an appropriate level of services that are sustainable, affordable and acceptable to the community. The County will begin its budget development process by conducting a Line of Business Review. All County agencies have been given a target of a 15% permanent reduction in County funding which will be publicly presented to the Board of Supervisors for its review beginning in September. The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board’s assigned amount is $16.2 million.
Our Response
The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) has already distributed a draft of the Reduction Options which were available on the CSB website. The CSB is hosting a dialogue session with stakeholders to gather comments regarding the DRAFT Reduction Options for FY 2010 which were recently released for comment. The dialogue feedback will be used to make any final adjustments needed before the CSB Board adopts a prioritized list on September 24th. The CSB expects to release this list, with any needed edits, no later than September 17th.
The Format
The CSB plans to use an outside facilitator to guide the discussion following a question and answer format. Most useful will be suggestions about improving the description of the Reduction Options and especially the Impact Statements. It is not necessary to sign up to speak. It is the CSB’s hope that this format will foster an open sharing of information that can be helpful to everyone.
The Location and Time
The dialogue session will be held at a special two-hour meeting of the CSB Board on September 11, 2008, at the Fairfax County Government Center in Conference Rooms 9 and 10, beginning at 7:30 p.m. and ending at 9:30 p.m.
Community input will be very helpful as the CSB finalizes the presentation to the Board of Supervisors on November 14th.
