Conference Theme: “Girl Power – Kickin’ It Up!”
The Tenth Annual Girl Power Conference will be held Saturday, May 16, 2009, at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Virginia, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The conference theme is “Girl Power – Kickin’ It Up!” and workshops will focus on encouraging girls to build strong character and make healthy choices.
More than 150 girls who are in Girl Power groups will have an opportunity to participate in the conference, which brings girls together to strengthen their social development and foundations.
Keynote speakers for this year’s conference include Sarah Huffman, a member of the Washington Freedom women’s professional soccer team and the number one overall pick in the 2009 draft, and Lora Greene, an alumnus of the Girl Power program, who will share her experience and relate how the program has helped her transition into a young adult.
Girl Power is a 32-week program that combines weekly educational groups, community leadership service projects, therapeutic, recreational and cultural activities, concluding with the annual conference. Girl Power also offers workshops for parents and caregivers of Girl Power participants. The program is provided at 17 sites throughout Fairfax County through partnerships between the Fairfax- Falls Church Community Services Board, Fairfax County Public Schools and local non-profit agencies.
