| The Commissioner
of the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance
Abuse Services, James Reinhard, MD, has announced a process that
requires each region of the Commonwealth to explore opportunities
with all interested stakeholders to achieve a truly community-based
system of care.
The Project is intended to be a strategic and long-term process
involving a comprehensive assessment of changes needed and an
on-going grass-roots planning and communication process involving
key stakeholders to:
- engage in dialogue about major issues
facing the region;
- consider and propose regional and
state-level actions that would improve quality of care and
service capacity in the region; and
- explore potential opportunities to
restructure the region's public service delivery system.
A Steering Committee was established to get this project organized.
After reviewing the most immediate concerns in the Northern
Virginia Region, the Steering Committee concluded that the initial
assessment should focus on services to adults in need of mental
health services.
To obtain comprehensive stakeholder input, each of the five
Northern Virginia Community Services Boards has hosted one or
more community forums and consumer focus groups during March
and April. Additional opportunities for stakeholder input will
be provided prior to releasing the report.
This process is to be completed by August 1, 2004
