Rental Choice Virginia
About Rental Choice VA
The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) is participating in a 36-month pilot program sponsored by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) called “Rental Choice VA .” This program provides individuals with intellectual disability (ID) or developmental disabilities (DD) who currently live in group homes, intermediate care facilities (ICFs), or nursing facilities, or who live with their parents and receive Medicaid ID or DD Waiver services, an opportunity to move to safe, affordable rental housing they can lease on their own or with a friend.
Rental Choice VA makes rental housing affordable by offering:
- "Rent-up" assistance to help pay the costs of getting an apartment (such as application fees, security deposits, moving expenses, and utility deposits/connection fees), and
- Rental assistance, which pays the difference between 30% of the individual’s monthly adjusted household income and the gross contract rent for an approved unit.
ID and DD Waiver support coordinators help individuals apply for Rental Choice VA and guide them through the search process to find housing that meets Rental Choice VA standards. The coordinators also link individuals to community services that support them in their new homes. Individuals work with coordinators to develop person-centered plans that include a housing needs profile and a household budget, and that outline the services and resources needed for the initial transition to new housing and to maintain this housing. Support coordinators connect individuals to providers who deliver a variety of services, including in-home support, personal assistance, companion care, therapeutic consultation, assistive technology, and environmental modifications.
