Partnership for Permanent Housing:
Helping homeless families attain homes of their own
What is Partnership for Permanent Housing (PPH)
The Partnership for Permanent Housing is an innovative, five-year pilot project that began in 2006 to help 25 homeless families with children under age 18 become self-sufficient, secure permanent housing, and eventually own their own homes.
Fairfax County’s Department of Family Services and the county’s Department of Housing and Community Development oversee the program, with support from three local nonprofit organizations: Northern Virginia Family Service, Reston Interfaith, and New Hope Housing.
The Department of Family Services oversees the work of the nonprofit organization partners, including the day-to-day operation of the program and the provision of supportive services.
The Department of Housing and Community Development contracts with landlords in the county to provide affordable rental housing for participating families. Families pay approximately 30 percent of their income for rent – HCD pays the balance through federal housing programs. HCD also links families to sources of assistance for down payments, closing costs and mortgages.
The three nonprofit organizations provide a project manager and case managers, coordinate the selection of candidates for the program, and recruit mentors and volunteers to work with participating families. The partners are Northern Virginia Family Service, Reston Interfaith, and New Hope Housing, Inc.
The Partnership for Permanent Housing brings together the resources of local government, businesses, nonprofit institutions, community groups, faith-based organizations and individuals to help homeless families in Fairfax County. It is one of many ways the county is working to end homelessness.
