May is Foster Care and Foster Family Recognition Month

Proclamation from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors

WHEREAS, every May, Fairfax County renews its commitment to ensuring a bright future for the nearly 300 children and youth in foster care, and we celebrate all those who make a meaningful difference in their lives; and

WHEREAS, this year, the theme for National Foster Care Month is "Building Blocks to Permanent Families;" and

WHEREAS, the family, serving as the primary source of love, identity, self-esteem and support, is the very foundation of our society; and

WHEREAS, without permanent families, children and youth struggle to find the meaningful, long-term relationships that will help them transition into adulthood; and

WHEREAS, young people in foster care need nurturing adults on their side because their own families are in crisis and unable to care for them; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Family Services has more than 100 foster families throughout the county who make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and youth in foster care; and

WHEREAS, Northern Virginia Family Service partners with the Department of Family Services to lift up the children in our care toward a bright, productive future; and

WHEREAS, by helping children today who will one day be active and contributing members of our society, we improve the lives of every Fairfax County resident;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, on behalf of all residents of Fairfax County, does hereby proclaim the month of May 2014 as
