May is Foster Care and Foster Family Recognition Month

Proclamation from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors

WHEREAS, there are children in Fairfax County who have experienced devastating losses of family and identity due to abuse or neglect, and

WHEREAS, their confidence and feelings of self-worth are often shattered, leaving them frightened and alone, and

WHEREAS, more than 175 foster families throughout the county give these children love and support and help encourage and prepare them for the years ahead; and

WHEREAS, foster and adoptive parents are people who care about children and want to make a difference by opening their hearts and their homes to children in need, and

WHEREAS, there are currently about 350 children in foster care in Fairfax County; and

WHEREAS, by improving the lives of these children, foster families enhance the quality of life for everyone in our community, NOW THEREFORE

BE IT RESOLVED, that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, on behalf of all residents of Fairfax County, does hereby proclaim the month of May 2012 as

Foster Care and Foster
Family Recognition Month

in Fairfax County and urges all residents, during this month and throughout the year, to volunteer their time and talents on behalf of children in foster care, and to support and recognize the commitment of foster families and professional staff who work with these children.
