Free seminars for caregivers of older adults

The Fairfax Caregiver Seminar Consortium is sponsoring a series of 12 free seminars this spring for caregivers of older adults. Topics include: transitions (how to tell when a loved one needs more help); long-distance caregiving (what to do when you live far from a loved one); financial management during difficult times; Alzheimer’s disease (strategies for effective communication); and more. Seminars take place at various times and locations in Fairfax County, during April and May.

Fri., Apr. 7:  Understanding Communication and Behavior in Alzheimer’s Disease.     10-11:30 a.m. Alzheimer’s Family Day Center, 2812 Old Lee Hwy., Fairfax. Speakers: Nancy Dezan, Alzheimer’s Assn. and Susan Stone, Alzheimer’s Family Day Center.

Tues., Apr. 11: Financial Management 101. 7-8:30 p.m. Centreville Regional Library, 14200 St. Germain Dr., Centreville. Speaker: Thomas C. West, Financial Advisor.

Tues., Apr. 18: Home Is No Longer an Option…Now What? 1-2:30 p.m. Herndon Senior Center, 873 Grace St., Herndon. Speakers: Anne O’Neill, Geriatric Care Manager, and Rita Schumacher, Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program.

Wed., Apr. 19: Long Distance Caregiving. 7-8:30 p.m. George Mason Regional Library, 7001 Little River Turnpike, Annandale. Speaker: Cathy Cole, Elderlink.

Wed., Apr. 26: Navigating the Legal and Medicaid Maze of Long Term Care. 7-8:30 p.m. Lincolnia Adult Day Health Care Center, 4710 N. Chambliss St., Alexandria. Speakers:  Jean Galloway Ball, Elder Law Attorney; Nora Torres, Fairfax Co. Dept. of Family Services.
