Fairfax County’s Volunteer Solutions
Needs Meals on Wheels Volunteers in Fairfax Area
Fairfax County’s Meals on Wheels program needs volunteers to pick up and deliver meals to older people who live in the Fairfax area. The program offers volunteer opportunities on a weekly, biweekly, monthly or substitute basis. A valid driver’s license is required and mileage reimbursement is available.
Meals are picked up at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, 3600 Joseph Siewick Drive, Fairfax, Va., and are delivered to older adults, Monday through Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The Meals on Wheels program is part of Fairfax County’s 2,000 strong Volunteer Solutions, a program of the Department of Family Services’ Fairfax Area Agency on Aging.
“All of our programs help older people ‘age in place’ in their own homes,” said Volunteers Solutions Director Ruth Reagan, LCSW. “Meals on Wheels help older people, who can’t prepare meals for themselves, maintain their health and nutritional status,” she said. “Volunteers also provide a brief but very important social connection,” she added.
Volunteer Solutions provides a number of other opportunities to help older adults in the county including driving to medical appointments, grocery shopping, insurance counseling, Pets on Wheels, and friendly visiting. Ms. Reagan emphasized that these opportunities are quite flexible and can be worked around a wide range of volunteer time demands. “You can volunteer with Volunteer Solutions pretty much any time of the day,” she said.
