Fairfax County Offers Digital Transition Assistance
to Older Adults and Adults with Disabilities
Older adults and adults with disabilities who are having difficulty preparing their analog television for the nationwide digital transition can receive assistance from Fairfax County. Telephone assistance is available from the county’s Department of Cable Communications and Consumer Protection. Some residents may also be eligible for free assistance to install the converter box from the county’s Volunteer Solutions program.
All major TV stations will begin broadcasting exclusively in digital after February 17, 2009. People with analog TVs that use antennas to pick up broadcast channels must install a converter box, subscribe to cable/satellite or purchase a new digital set to continue watching TV.
Some older adults and adults with disabilities may have difficulty with this, particularly with installing a converter box.
Telephone assistance covers questions about the transition process and
assistance on how to install a TV converter box. For information or
assistance, contact the Department of Cable Communications and Consumer
Protection at 703-324-5900, TTY 711,
wwwcprd@fairfaxcounty.gov
or visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/cable.
Fairfax County’s Volunteer Solutions program will provide volunteers to county residents who meet the following criteria:
- Fairfax County residency;
- Age 60 years or older or have a disability and age 18 or older;
- Unable to install the converter box and can not find help;
- No television in the home that has a digital tuner or is connected to cable/satellite.
To request a volunteer, call 703-324-7118; TTY 703-449-1186 or e-mail DFSAAAVOLUNTEER@fairfaxcounty.gov. Volunteer Solutions is a program of the Department of Family Services’ Division of Adult and Aging Services and Fairfax Area Agency on Aging. For reasonable accommodations call 703-324-5406; TTY 703-449-1186.
Fairfax County is committed to nondiscrimination on the basis of disability in all county programs, services and activities. To request this information in an alternate format, call Department of Family Services' Fairfax Area Agency on Aging at 703-324-5411, TTY 703-449-1186.
