Free Tax Preparation Services Begin January 24
for Low Income Families in Northern Virginia

Last year families throughout Northern Virginia received more than $2 million in federal refunds through the free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, locally known as the Northern Virginia CASH Campaign – Creating Assets, Savings and Hope.

At this time of economic downturn and growing need, here is an opportunity for individuals and families who earned less than $42,000 in 2008 to get help filing their tax returns at no cost. Starting January 24, 2009, and running through April 2009, IRS certified volunteers at 16 sites in Northern Virginia will help make sure that low income families receive the maximum tax refund to which they are entitled and help determine if they are eligible for the earned income tax credit.

The Fairfax County Department of Family Services is leading the Northern Virginia effort to mobilize a coalition of public agencies, businesses, libraries, faith and community-based groups to operate the tax assistance program.

“This service is so important because it informs people about the Earned Income Tax Credit and other assistance that may be available to help them afford basic necessities such as rent or food for their children,” said Dai Nguyen, Employment and Training Program manager for the Fairfax County Department of Family Services.

People seeking tax preparation assistance are asked to bring the following items with them:

  • Photo identification.
  • Social security cards and birthdates for the taxpayer, spouse and dependents.
  • Wage and earnings statements: W-2, W-2G, 1099-R.
  • Unemployment compensation form 1099-G
  • Interest and dividend statements.
  • Child care expenses paid in 2008 and the child care provider’s name, address and federal ID number.
  • Student loan interest payments.
  • Record of tuition or student loan payments, 1098-E.
  • Copy of last year’s federal and state returns including economic stimulus check total.
  • Check or deposit slip for direct deposit of refund.

If married and filing a joint return, both spouses must be present.
