County opens “pre-release” employment center July 30
Local law enforcement and regional and state workforce and economic development officials are launching an innovative effort to provide comprehensive employment and training services to offenders preparing to return to the community after release from jail.
The opening of the new SkillSource One-Stop Employment
Center in the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Pre-Release Center will be
celebrated Wednesday, July 30, at 10 a.m.

Background:
The new pre-release employment center is a collaborative initiative
involving Fairfax County law enforcement and human services officials and
the Northern Virginia Workforce Investment Board. Initial funding came
from a $150,000 grant from the Governor’s Office for Workforce
Development and the Virginia Workforce Council to the
SkillSource Group Inc., the Northern Virginia Workforce
Investment Board and the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office. The county’s
Department of Family Services operates the center under contract.
In addition to providing basic and comprehensive employment and training services, the center will help those preparing to leave jail connect with local employers, who will be able to meet, interview and hire job seekers prior to their release. SkillSource center staff will work with employers to coordinate supportive services, assist with employee bonding, and provide other employment-related assistance. The goal of the center is to improve chances for a successful transition and reduce chances of recidivism.
