Fairfax County recognized Vietnamese Meals on Wheels volunteers for their dedicated service to the community at an April 25 celebration of the program’s third successful year. The celebration took place at an afternoon ceremony in the Mason Government District Center in Annandale.

Vo Minh Luan, Tran Thi Phuong, Le Kieu Van and Huynh Minh Nguyen received plaques recognizing their long-term service from Jan Kikuchi, manager of Fairfax Area Agency on Aging’s nutrition program. Ms. Kikuchi also acknowledged the Vietnamese media for playing a key role in recruiting volunteers since the program’s early days.

The Vietnamese Meals on Wheels program’s 39 volunteers now serve 480 traditional Vietnamese meals to 48 county residents who speak Vietnamese. Many, but not all, volunteers speak Vietnamese. The Vietnamese Meals on Wheels is one of 22 County Meals on Wheels volunteer partnerships providing this service to residents of Fairfax County, Falls Church City and Fairfax City.

According to Ms. Kikuchi, volunteer deliverers provide a brief but important connection to older, isolated Vietnamese adults who may not speak to anyone else all day.

Ms. Kikuchi said the Vietnamese Meals on Wheels program is currently recruiting volunteer deliverers. The commitment is just once or twice a month for a few hours (10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.). To volunteer, call the Fairfax Area Agency on Aging at 703-324-3552, TTY 703-449-1186 or e-mail Kim-Ha.Ly@fairfaxcounty.gov. Callers can leave their name and telephone number in Vietnamese or English.

The Fairfax Area Agency on Aging is part of the Department of Family Services’ Division of Adult and Aging Services.

Fairfax County is committed to nondiscrimination on the basis of disability in all county programs, services and activities. To request this information in an alternate format, call 703-324-5411, TTY 703-449-1186.
