Fairfax County Presents:
New Telephone Support Group
for Korean-Speaking Caregivers of Older Adults
Fairfax County announces the launch of a new telephone support group for Korean-speaking caregivers of older adults. The support group will “meet” over the telephone on the third Tuesdays of May, August and November from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Kristine Choe, the support group facilitator, said the group will provide service information and emotional support to Korean-speaking family caregivers. These caregivers, she said, are often unable to access support due to language barriers.
“These caregivers are dealing with some very sensitive issues and they often don’t know where to turn and have no time to drive to a support group,” said Ms. Choe.
Participants of the Korean-speaking caregiver support program must be Fairfax County residents who are family caregivers of an older adult. This includes spouses, adult children, grandchildren and other relatives.
Those interested must pre-register to receive the telephone number for the caregiver support group. They then call that number shortly before the group meets. Contact Ms. Choe at (703)324-5847, TTY 703-449-1186 or e-mail Kristine.Choe@fairfaxcounty.gov.
The program is sponsored by the Fairfax Area Agency on Aging, a part of Fairfax County’s Department of Family Services.
Sharon Lynn, assistant director of the agency, explained that the Korean program is modeled on the agency’s successful English language telephone support group. That program meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.
Ms. Lynn said that the Korean-speaking telephone support group is just one of the county’s programs that reach out to non-English speaking residents. Korean speaking residents seeking services for older adults can either call 703-324-7948, TTY 324-449-1186 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and ask for translation services or call 703-324-3543, TTY 711 Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and speak to a Korean-speaking volunteer.
