The Fairfax County Department of Family Services hosted an evening of appreciation for community partners and volunteers from Fairfax County as part of National Foster Care Month and National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month on April 20.
It was a chance for the DFS Children, Youth and Families Division to recognize the contributions of businesses, community agencies, associations and organizations, faith communities, foundations, scouting, sororities and fraternities, and individual volunteers who support Foster Care and Adoption, Child Abuse Prevention, Child Protective Services and Family Preservation Services.
“The help you provide impacts so many families in our community,” said DFS Director Nannette Bowler. “Many of our programs would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of our wonderful partners and volunteers.”
The event was held at Grace Presbyterian Church in Springfield, VA, where children entertained the attendees with music. Volunteers and partners also spoke about their rewarding experiences. “Volunteering with Fairfax County’s Parenting Education Program is entirely a win-win for me,” said volunteer Perrin Myers. “The children are so awesome. They learn and gain from the program, and I learn and gain so much from them.”
The following local businesses donated food and supplies to make the event possible: Applebee’s-Fairfax, California Tortilla-Fairfax, COSTCO-Fairfax, Grace Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Gumax International Cuisine, Olive Garden-Fairfax, Popeyes-Richmond Highway, Silver Diner-Fair Oaks, and Whole Foods Market-Vienna and Springfield.
