Over the past ten years, Grace Presbyterian Church in Springfield has partnered with the Fairfax County Department of Family Services (DFS) to assist hundreds of families in need. On Wednesday, Oct. 12, DFS and Grace Presbyterian celebrated this highly successful 10-year partnership with hors d'oeuvres and heartfelt thanks. Some of the family members who have participated over the past ten years spoke during the celebration.

Ten years ago, the church approached DFS about starting a parent education program for its members. Volunteers began by cooking and serving meals, providing child care, and cleaning up. Over the years, they donated book bags to students, sent children to camp, tutored children, and provided gifts, clothing and food. The church also started donating money to the program, increasing the amount each year, totaling more than $10,000 dollars over the past ten years. Some volunteers even received training to become program facilitators.

The DFS parenting programs change lives. They bring together families who want to learn better ways to raise their children, who want to learn how to be kinder and more respectful to each other. Organizations and community groups can be a part of this life-changing effort by providing meeting space, food, money and - most importantly - time.
