Domestic and Sexual Violence Services

What is domestic/family violence? In domestic or family violence, one person attempts to control or hurt another through actions or threats that can include physical, sexual, verbal, or psychological abuse. People of all ages, income levels, faiths, sexual orientation, gender, and education levels can experience domestic or family violence. What is sexual violence? Sexual violence is the general term used to explain any act of a sexual nature where a person is forced, threatened, or intimidated into engaging in the activity without her or his permission. Some examples of this are rape, forced sodomy, sexual harassment, and indecent exposure. Domestic and Sexual Violence Services can help if: You have been sexually assaulted and you don’t know what to do. A family member or friend is a survivor of sexual assault or domestic violence and you want to know how to help them. You were sexually assaulted some time ago and are now having difficulty because of this past trauma. You are in a relationship in which you are being physically and/or emotionally abused. You have been abusive toward a partner or family member, and you want to stop your abusive behavior. You have ended a relationship and are being stalked or harassed. You have separated from an abusive partner and need help making the transition. How you can help: Become a volunteer. If you are interested in being trained to answer our 24-hour hotline, work with groups for survivors, offenders, or children, provide hospital accompaniment, or any of a number of opportunities with our program, please call our volunteer coordinator at 703-324-9495, TTY 703-324-5706. Counseling, Individual and Group Individual counseling available for domestic and sexual violence survivors. Group counseling available for domestic and sexual violence survivors and perpetrators of domestic violence. Information Current information on the medical, legal, and psychological aspects of sexual and domestic violence is available. Our staff includes those trained to address legal and immigration issues, economic and housing issues, substance abuse, and the needs of children. Referrals Linking clients to additional needed services. These include social services, legal referrals, job counseling, information on housing, and many others. Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence Victims of domestic violence who are in danger and in need of shelter can call Artemis House at 703-435-4940, TTY 703-435-1235. Access to shelter is available 24 hours a day. Batterer Intervention Program - ADAPT A certified 18-week program in which participants are taught to prevent abuse through the development of compassion for themselves and others. Call 703-968-4052, TTY 703-324-5706. Hospital Accompaniment When requested, for victims of sexual and domestic violence. Education Violence prevention and education programs are available for community groups, organizations, schools, and any other interested parties. Consultation and Training Available for professionals who, in the course of their work, deal with those whose lives are affected by sexual and/or domestic violence.
