South Van Dorn Street/Franconia Road Project
South Van Dorn Street (Route
613) and Franconia Road (Route 644) are main commuter routes linking
major residential areas of southeastern Fairfax County with the Capital
Beltway and the city of Alexandria. The two roadways also provide
access to the Franconia-Springfield and South Van Dorn Street Metro rail
stations. The existing signalized intersection at South Van Dorn Street
and Franconia Road frequently experiences major congestion and delay.
These delays are now extending beyond the normal peak hours and are
projected to worsen as traffic volumes continue to increase. The Fairfax County Comprehensive Plan
identifies an interchange at this location. The construction of the grade
separated interchange will significantly improve the traffic flow, reduce
the delays and user costs, improve the air quality, and reduce the
traffic accidents. The project is currently funded for design and partial
right-of-way only. No construction funding is available yet.
