Fall Cankerworm Aerial Treatment Program
Urban foresters have detected high populations of cankerworms in Lee and Mount Vernon Districts. To minimize tree mortality, the Fairfax County Forest Pest Management Branch has developed a suppression program to take place in mid to late April. This year the county will treat approximately 2,000 acres. Using helicopters, experienced pilots will spray the canopy of trees with the most environmentally sound insecticide available, Bacillus thuringensis (Bt.). Once the cankerworm caterpillar ingests the Bt. they stop feeding and die within a week.
Fairfax County residents are encouraged to complete the fall cankerworm report form. That will assist urban foresters to determine areas where future monitoring may take place.
Written notification will be mailed to all property owners within the treatment areas and within 3,000 feet of any treatment. Participation in this program is voluntary. If you receive written notification that your property is located within a treatment area and you wish not to participate, you must notify, in writing, the Forest Pest Management Branch at 12055 Government Center Parkway, Suite 518, Fairfax, VA 22035. Your letter must be postmarked no later than March 15, 2013.
