Education Programs
The Urban Forestry Office is offering two presentations availible to classrooms and clubs. In each program, an Urban Forester will visit your class or club to share interesting facts about Fairfax County's forests and provide interactive activities.
Alien Invaders includes discussion about the native
and invasive species that are found in Fairfax County and across the
Unites States.
Topics Discussed:
- Identify native, nonnative and invasive species
- Determine qualities that make invasive species destructive
- Review current invasive species found in Fairfax County
- Discuss methods for removing/preventing invasive species from the landscape
Possible Activities:
- Students will invent their own alien
- Constructing a stink bug trap
Time: 20 - 40 minutes

Trees Please introduces students to the many benefits trees
provide to our local environment.
Topics Discussed:
- Identify the characteristics of trees
- Classify the benefits trees provide to the environment, animals and people
- List products made from trees
- Measures everyone can take to protect trees
Possible Activities:
- Leaf rubbings
- Homemade paper
- Write a tree poem
- Read a story
