What is hazardous waste?
Chemically-based products such as paint, solvents, pesticides and acids that are flammable, corrosive, reactive or toxic are considered hazardous. They must be properly handled and packaged to minimize the impact on the environment. These materials are separated into two categories: household or business. If they were used in and around the home they are household hazardous wastes. If they were used for a nonresidential purpose, they are classified as business hazardous wastes.

If your business generates only a small amount of hazardous waste, you may have found disposal difficult and expensive. Many small businesses are looking for an affordable, simple solution to disposing of these wastes. Fairfax County is working on just such a solution.

Some small businesses may qualify for a special hazardous waste disposal program. The county sponsors a program for Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQG) located in Fairfax County. An exempt business is one that generates less than 220 pounds or 27 gallons of hazardous materials during a month. This program is operated by Safety Kleen Services, Inc. and Curbside, Inc. There is a fee for disposal of hazardous materials from small quantity generators. Under this program, a Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator will directly pay the fee to the contractor. To arrange for a collection, please call Curbside, Inc. at 1-800-449-7587. For more information and details regarding the small quantity generator program, please call 703-324-5230, TTY 711.

Where can I dispose of latex paint?
If you do not want the paint anymore, try to find someone who can use it, e.g., a neighbor, theater group or church. If you must dispose of it, take the lid off the can, place it in a well-ventilated location, let the paint dry, and throw away the dried paint with your regular garbage. Mixing kitty litter into the paint accelerates drying. Latex paint is not considered a household hazardous waste.
