Does Fairfax County require an ice barrier on roofs?

Yes. Roofs are required to have an ice barrier that extends from the lowest edge of the roof to 24 inches inside the building. Many suppliers sell ice barrier products which consist of self-adhering polymer modified bitumen sheets. The building code also allows you to cement together two layers of "tar paper" which is actually asphalt-saturated organic felt.

Can I install wood shingles or wood shakes on my townhouse?

Yes, provided you follow the manufacturers installation instructions.

What is the minimum roof slope required for asphalt shingles?

Asphalt shingles must be installed on a slope greater than or equal to 2:12 (17 percent) and per the manufacturer's installation instructions.
