May is Building Safety Month in Fairfax County

Fairfax County, along with several regional neighbors, is recognizing May 2014 as Building Safety Month to focus attention on the importance of the statewide building code and the role of code professionals in ensuring safe construction in Fairfax and throughout the region.

Fairfax County issued 61,088 permits of various types, all related to residential and commercial building and construction projects in 2013—an increase of six percent from 2012.

Following the building permit process essentially adds a group of experts—plan reviewers, engineers, inspector, technical assistants and others—to commercial and residential projects undertaken in the county. The process is designed to engage residents, contractors and developers as partners in ensuring the proper design and safe construction of projects of varying complexity.

In commemoration of Building Safety Month, the Fairfax County Department of Public Works, in partnership with five other local governments (Arlington County; the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church; and the town of Herndon) have planned several events where residents can get free advice from building inspectors and engineers on how to make their homes safe:

  • Building Safety Month Kick-off Breakfast – Friday, May 2, at 9 a.m., at Fairfax City Hall (10455 Armstrong Street, Fairfax). The program will feature two distinguished speakers:

P. Brian Scull
Director of Development, The Shooshan Company
and
Robert C. Dube

County Administrator, Louisa County, Virginia

Contact Mr. Patrick Nnaji, with the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, to make your reservation by calling 703-324-1837, TTY 711.

  • Ask a Pro at Home Depot – May 3 and 4, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.: Homeowners and contractors can ask building code and safety questions at booths located at store entrances at the following locations:
    • 6201 Arlington Blvd., Fairfax
    • 3201 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax
    • 1651 Reston Parkway, Reston
    • 400 S. Pickett Street, Alexandria

These booths will be staffed by professional engineers and inspectors from Fairfax County, Arlington County, the City of Fairfax, the City of Alexandria, the City of Falls Church, and the Town of Herndon.
