Business Hazardous Waste Disposal Event Dates for 2017 Announced

In 2016, Fairfax County's Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG) program collected nearly 13 tons of hazardous waste at the I-66 transfer station in Fairfax, Va. Hazardous waste is defined as ignitable, toxic, corrosive, and reactive material, and removing these dangerous chemicals from the waste stream protects trash collection workers and the environment.

Businesses in Fairfax County that generate small amounts of hazardous waste are invited to participate in this safe, legal, and affordable disposal program again in 2017. Six disposal events have been scheduled at the transfer station's household hazardous waste disposal facility. Events run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine.

2017 Schedule of CESQG Events at the I-66 Transfer Station:

  • Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017
  • Wednesday, March 15, 2017
  • Wednesday, May 10, 2017
  • Wednesday, July 12, 2017
  • Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017
  • Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017

The CESQG program was created as a solution for businesses that generate 220.26 pounds of hazardous waste or no more than 2.2 pounds of acutely hazardous waste per month. Waste may include batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, products containing mercury, paint, cleaning products, and other chemical products. Business, or commercial waste, is only accepted during disposal events.

Program manager Daniel Brooks said, "The rapid growth of the program has been extraordinary. Doubling the number of events in 2016 from three to six was clearly impactful." He added, "Environmental stewardship and sustainability aren't just words - they can only become realized through persistent action. That is something we are doing at ground zero and I look forward to continued participation and growth in our program in 2017."

Program Guidelines

Enrollment in the CESQG program is free, but participants must pay disposal fees based on material type and volume. The program does not require extensive record keeping; however, businesses must submit a signed and notarized liability waiver. A notary may be available during disposal events. Participants should call ahead of time to confirm if a notary will be present. Materials must be delivered in secure labeled containers. Drums larger than five gallons will not be accepted. CESQGs must bring a copy of their business, property, state, or county business license to prove that their business is located in Fairfax County.

A brochure that includes guidelines, accepted materials, a map, and disposal pricing may be downloaded from the website. The I-66 transfer station is located at 4618 West Ox Road in Fairfax. Follow the household hazardous waste signs. Answers to questions about proper storage and disposal of hazardous waste may be found online or by calling 703-803-9614 or 703-803-6158, TTY 711.

Solid Waste Management Program

The program is run by the Solid Waste Management Program, a division of the county's Department of Public Works and Environmental Services. The Solid Waste Management Program supports a partnership of public and private-sector resources to provide waste prevention, recycling, composting, and disposal services to residents and businesses. The program, which is funded by disposal fees, processes thousands of pounds of solid waste every day, which is recycled or converted to electricity at a waste-to-energy facility.
