Take the Meadow Home with You
County employees, family, friends and residents: join the staff of the Stormwater Planning Division, Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District and Earth Sangha for a FREE pick-a-thon and seed gathering event at the Government Center pollinator meadow on Thursday, July 20, 2017 from 11:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The pollinator meadow is behind the Fairfax County Government Center at 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, VA 22035.
This is a one-time opportunity to gather wildflowers and seed heads before mowing takes place. Meadow establishment takes multiple years. To promote greater diversity and resilience of the meadow to support pollinators, the wildflowers will be mowed just once this year on Monday, July 24.
Bring gloves, a hat, bug repellant, sunscreen, scissors and bags or vases to carry the cut flowers you choose to take. Small bags for seeds and instructions for sowing will be available. Staff will be present to answer questions about the pollinator meadow, seed collecting and sowing.
There may be ticks and other insects in the meadow. Protect yourself by following these Health Department recommendations: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/hd/westnile/lyme-disease.htm.
