Building Permit Requirements

  • You must obtain building permits for your finished basement.
  • Building plans are required, but may be substituted with the typical drawings shown below.
  • Your new finished basement must have an emergency escape and rescue window or door to the outside, unless it has no bedrooms and the house was built before Oct. 1, 2003.
  • Your project must be inspected to ensure the construction is in accordance with the code and the approved plans.

Typical Finished Basement Details

The Fairfax County Typical Finished Basement Details are standard construction plans that can be used in lieu of a plan submission during the permit application process if you finished your basement in full conformance with the guide.
