Carport Enclosures

BUILDING PERMITS

Enclosing an existing carport in Fairfax County requires the following permits.

  • Building Permit.
  • Electrical Permit.
  • Mechanical Permit if installing heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Plumbing Permit if installing plumbing fixtures or gas piping.

To apply for a permit, go to the Permit Application Center at the Herrity Building in Fairfax. To learn more about the permit application process, please refer to our Carport Enclosures (PDF) publication.

BUILDING PLANS

You must submit the following during the permit application process.

  • Two sets of building plans.*
  • Two copies of the energy calculations when enclosing a carport into a living space.
  • Two copies of the house location plat.

Building plans must meet the current building code and local design criteria like snow load and wind speed. For a full list of plan requirements, please refer to our Carport Enclosures (PDF) publication.

*Please note: if you agree to enclose your carport in strict conformance with the Fairfax County Typical Carport Enclosure Details (PDF), you are not required to submit plans during the permit application process.
