BUILDING PERMITS

Building a garage, tool shed, storage shed or other similar accessory structure in Fairfax County requires the following permits.

• Building Permit for all garages and sheds greater than 150 square feet.
• Electrical Permit.
• VDOT Permit if your property is located on a state road, and if you need a grading plan.

BUILDING PLANS

You must submit the following during the permit application process.

• Two sets of building plans.
• Two copies of the house location plat or grading plan.

Building plans must meet the current building code and local design criteria like snow load and wind speed. For a full list of plan requirements, please refer to our Garages & Sheds (PDF) publication.
