Testing Guidelines for Infiltration Facilities

A publication on Testing Guidelines for Infiltration Facilities (PDF) used for stormwater management is now available. The purpose of infiltration testing is to determine the character and physical properties of natural soil deposits proposed to be used for infiltration of stormwater. The investigation must be planned with knowledge of the intended project size, facility size, land utilization, and general soil characteristics. The publication covers guidelines for field investigations and testing, laboratory testing, and report preparation. The current document is a refinement of testing guidelines that have been distributed informally by county geotechnical reviewers to submitting design professionals for several years. The guidelines have been reviewed by several geotechnical consultants and members of the Geotechnical Review Board.  Use of the guidelines in this publication will help to assure that infiltration facilities are appropriately sited and designed. The guidelines may be updated periodically as experience is gained in their use.

If you have any questions, please contact a geotechnical engineer in the Environmental and Facilities Review Division at 703-324-1720, TTY 711.
