A wide variety of materials are accepted at the county's two solid waste facilities: the I-66 Transfer Station Complex in Fairfax and the I-95 Landfill Complex in Lorton.
Most recyclables are accepted for free (plastic bottles and jugs, metal food and beverage cans, container glass, mixed paper, etc.), while other items can be recycled for a modest fee (brush, leaves and grass, appliances, tires). The fees help offset special processing costs.
Household trash is also accepted, for a fee, at both locations. Household hazardous waste is accepted at both locations during specified hours.
