Who Picks Up My Trash

Who Picks Up My Trash?

In Fairfax County, trash is picked up by a private solid waste collection company or by the county.

Most residents' trash is picked up by a private collector via a contract, a subscription, or through their homeowners associations.

About 44,000 customers have county service, which is provided through the county.  This is billed as a separate line item on their real estate taxes.

To find out who picks up your trash, answer the following questions:

  • Do you pay for trash service to your homeowners association, or have trash service included in your dues? If YES, then you have a private collection company. You can contact your homeowners association or the company directly with questions or problems.
  • Do you pay a trash bill to a specific company, usually monthly or quarterly? If YES, then you have a private collection company. You can contact the company directly with questions or problems.

If you answered NO to both of these questions, then you probably have county service, which is billed on your real estate taxes as a separate line item once a year. You can contact the county at 703-802-3322, TTY 711 with questions or problems.

If you're still not sure whether you have county service or private service, you can check your address against our database using the special collection check address tool.
