Minimum Residential Recycling Requirements
Fairfax County does NOT collect trash for all residents who live in the county. For more information, see "Who picks up my trash?"
This page lists the minimum recycling requirements for county residents. Your service provider may collect additional materials. Contact your collection company or property manager for specific instructions.
Single-Family Homes and Townhomes
- Cardboard & Mixed Paper
- Metal Food & Beverage Containers
- Glass Bottles & Jars
- Plastic Bottles & Jugs
- Appliances: Contact your collector for set out instructions. You may be charged an additional fee for the collection of appliances.
- Grass, Leaves & Brush: Yard waste is collected separately from trash March 21 - Dec. 24. (NOTE: Townhouse communities can apply to use an alternative recycling system for yard waste management.)

Apartments and Condominiums
All apartment and condominium residents should be able to recycle cardboard and mixed paper onsite. (Apartments and condominiums built after July 2007 are required to provide onsite recycling for metal food & beverage cans, glass bottles & jars, plastic bottles & jugs and scrap metal. This level of service is optional for communities built before July 2007).
Please recycle the items below at a drop-off center or in your complex as directed by the property manager.

Flyers are available for property owners and managers to use in educating their tenants. Versions are available in English and Spanish and include: Residential Cardboard and Mixed Paper ONLY (B&W or color) and Residential Cardboard and Mixed Paper PLUS additional materials (B&W or color).
