Single Stream Collection of Recyclables
Some local solid waste collection companies are using a technique called single stream to collect recyclables. With this method, all recyclables (except yard waste) are collected in the same compartment. This is possible because the recyclables are taken to a facility where they are separated by type.
Typically, single stream collection of recyclables uses a rear-end packer truck for collection. This is the same type of truck that is used to collect trash.
Single stream recycling does not mean that recyclables and trash are mixed together. Mixing trash and recyclables is prohibited by county ordinance. If you see your collection company mixing trash and recyclables, please report them to our office by calling 703-324-5230, TTY 711. If possible, get the name of the collection company and the truck number or license plate number. This will help us in our investigation, as there are fines associated with improper collection.
