The New Alexandria and Belle View neighborhoods in southern Fairfax County experienced significant flooding during Hurricane Isabel in September 2003. These neighborhoods are located along the lower Potomac River and are susceptible to tidal flooding. Fairfax County has contracted with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to develop a plan to protect the neighborhoods in that area from flooding, as detailed in its February 2008 report, Corps of Engineers Flood Damage Reduction Analysis for Belle Haven Watershed.
