Stormwater management is the process of controlling runoff (rain, melting snow and ice, etc.) draining off roads, sidewalks, driveways, roofs and other hard surfaces. Once the runoff reaches natural areas (grass, woodland, etc.), some of it will soak into the ground or flow directly into streams, but a large amount is collected into the storm drainage system. (In Fairfax County, the storm drainage system is not part of the sanitary sewer system, which pipes sewage to a treatment plant.) The runoff flows into the storm drainage system through curb inlets, yards inlets, grates, etc., then storm pipe systems carry the runoff either to stormwater detention facilities or directly to streams.
