Since beginning operation in 1990, the facility has passed several significant milestones:
-
Increased Waste Disposal Efficiency
Approximately 15 million tons of trash were deposited in the I-95 Landfill over a 25 year period (1970-1995). The same quantity of trash was processed through the Energy Resource Recovery Facility in only 15 years!
-
Saved Landfill Space
Traditional landfilling takes up a lot of valuable space. From 1970 to 1995, approximately 260 acres were used for depositing trash at the I-95 Landfill. Since the Energy Resource Recovery Facility began operation, approximately 16,200 acres/ft. of landfill volume have been saved. This equates to the capacity of one football stadium filled approximately one mile high!
-
Generated Electricity
Between 1990 and 2005, the Energy Resource Recovery Facility generated 7.6 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. This is enough to power 76,000 homes for 15 years! It would have taken 26 million barrels of oil to produce that amount of electricity.
More information on the I-95 Energy Resource Recovery Facility is available online.
