Litter
Litter is the result of the improper disposal of trash. It has very negative environmental impacts including:
- Attracting rodents and insects which may breed disease;
- Polluting streams and lakes that flow to the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay;
- Killing fish and wildlife;
- Destroying scenic vistas.
The Keep America Beautiful Foundation estimates that 51 billion pieces of litter are thrown out every year at an annual clean-up cost of $11.5 billion.
